SB 253 - The California Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act
The Bill: The Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act (Senator Scott Wiener - SD11), will be a first in the nation requirement for comprehensive corporate GHG emissions disclosure by over 5,000 of the nation’s largest and most profitable public and private companies. It will usher in a new era of carbon data accountability give companies the data they need to decarbonize, empowers consumers, investors, and policymakers to take action and puts an end to greenwashing.
Carbon Accountable is a co-sponsor of SB 253 along with the California Environmental Voters, Ceres, The Greenlining Institute, and Sunrise Bay Area.
History and Current Status: Carbon Accountable developed the bill idea in later 2020 and Senator Scott Wiener first introduced the bill in January of 2021. After failing to get out of the California Legislature in 2022 (as SB 260), SB 253 was reintroduced in the California Senate on January 30, 2023. The bill passed out of the Senate on September 11, 2023 and Governor Gavin Newsom committed to sign the bill at Climate Week NYC on September 17, 2023.
